JEE Main is the largest engineering entrance exam of India. JEE stands for Joint Entrance Examination. It is usually held in the month of April.
The exam has two papers, Paper-1 and Paper-2. Candidates may opt for either or both of them. Both papers contain multiple choice questions. Paper 1 is for admission to B.E./B.Tech courses. It is conducted both online and offline. Paper-2 is for admission in B.Arch and B.Planning courses. It is conducted offline only.
JEE Main has a fixed exam structure. The paper-1 is of three hours duration and consists of thirty multiple choice (single-correct) questions in each of the three subjects (physics, chemistry and maths). There is negative marking for incorrect answers. 4 marks are awarded for correct answers and 1 mark is deducted for incorrect answers.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR JEE MAIN 2017
- The latest press release by MHRD mentioned that performance of 12th class will be required only for eligibility for admission in IITs.
- For the candidates to qualify in the JEE Advanced Examination, they shall have secured at least 75% marks or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th Class Examination conducted by respective boards. For SC/ST students this condition shall be relaxed to 65% marks.
- 12th boards marks will not be given 40% weightage in JEE Main 2017 for calculation of ranks. Rest of the selection process will remain unchanged.
- Ashok Mishra committee suggested the inclusion of an Aptitude Test for IIT after which 4 lacs student will be shortlisted for JEE and then 40,000 students will be provided with a rank for admission in IITs, NITs and other centrally funded institutes. However, as per the latest news, this Aptitude Test will not be conducted for JEE 2017.
