Is IIT everything?
By Sameer Kataria (IIT-Roorkee , Popular Quora Writer)
One fine day, I was sitting with my friends talking about all that we had gone through during those two years of stressful preparation. Suddenly something popped in my head which led me to think, “What If I hadn’t cleared JEE advanced ?” I went into a hypothetical world that exists in everyone’s head.
- 178 marks in JEE Mains
- 94% in CBSE boards
- JEE Mains rank – 14k
- 302 in BITSAT
- Hadn’t appeared for any other engineering entrance exams
After reading my marks, you can realise that I couldn’t have gotten into some good NIT as my rank was quite low. I couldn’t have even secured Computer Science Engineering in my state NIT. Coming to BITSAT, 302 marks weren’t enough to get a good 4 Year course at BITS. What If I hadn’t secured a rank in IIT-JEE. I would have been in some state college or BITS. Would that have been the end of my world? I am sure that wouldn’t have been the case.
My BITSAT exam was 2 days after my JEE Advanced exam. As I didn’t even check the answer key , I was unsure whether I will get selected in JEE. As my exam didn’t went as planned, I was feeling quite low. I thought, “Buddy, let’s score good in BITSAT” but again my BITSAT paper got screwed. Do you know how it felt at that point of time? My mind was numb. I was seeing myself nowhere near a good college. Overall my situation was quite bad. Do you know what I did in the next few days? I went on a mini vacation. I visited my old friends and relatives with whom I had ceased contact two years ago. I needed some distraction from my present and It was the best thing that I did.
Now see how I responded to the above situation. I first calmed my mind. This is what you should do. Give your mind enough distractions so as you don’t even think about the JEE fiasco. Join a gym, meet your old buddies and chill with them, go on a small trip or trek, play outdoor games. Basically get acquainted with something or the other. Eventually your mind will calm down and you might be able to think clearly. Many people put their heart and soul in JEE preparation but only few come through. Does this mean that they will eventually fail in life? Do you know that nearly 90% of the startups are of non-IITians and most of them are engineers. What if they had lost hope after they didn’t clear JEE? What if they had cursed themselves all their lives? Most of them wouldn’t have reached where they are today. Most of those million dollar startups that exist in the startup ecosystem wouldn’t have been their in the first place.
How many of you know Satya Nadella? Of those who don’t know him, he is the present CEO of Microsoft. Do you know that even he couldn’t clear IIT-JEE. He is an alma mater of Manipal Institute of technology and the CEO of one of the biggest Tech-Giants. What if he had lost hope after failing in JEE? He wouldn’t be where he stands today. Same is the case of Vishal Shekhar Sharma. He is the CEO of paytm. He is an alumni of DTU who went on to be CEO of a company which is valued at over 5bn$. Do you know who invented USB. An Indian and a non IITian. I can give you other big names who have scored big and haven’t attended IIT’s.
Failure is a part of life. These above mentioned people also had failed the JEE exam but their names are more prominent in the industry as compared to other IITians. Why? Just becomes they had zeal to do something in life. They developed skills that were required in the field they wanted to pursue. Failing a test didn’t hamper their hard work or the power to score it big. Even they were knocked down by the failures in their respective lives but they stood against all odds. They stood up when they were knocked down and struck back with double hard work and force.
Conclusion – IIT-JEE is one tough engineering exam which non-medical students will surely encounter. Out of those lakhs of people only a few(nealy 0.01%) crack this exam. People who couldn’t crack this exam mustn’t feel dejected. It is not end of their life. You are as intelligent as the one’s who cracked this exam. You just lacked in a little hard work. Also remember, an exam doesn’t decide your future. Everyone does something or the other in his life. Stay positive and keep working hard.
